Civet Poop Coffee Linked to Animal Cruelty
Ridiculously expensive Kopi Luwak, or civet coffee, is brewed from beans swallowed and excreted by civets have been called “Cruelty in a Cup”.
This coffee is real crap and being sold for $100 per cup. The worst part is people are buying it not knowing how viciously these animals are handled in order to produce this luxurious coffee bean.
Kopi Luwak, the world’s priciest coffee that’s brewed from beans swallowed and excreted by civets which are small mammals that look like a cross between cats and weasels is made with a jolt of animal cruelty. The civets are typically snatched from their homes and life in the wild to be imprisoned alone in tiny, barren cages. They are kept in captivity for 3 years before being released back into the wild and that the lack of nutrition and the stress from confinement that causes them to lose their fur also makes them so debilitated that many do not survive.
The animals behind this $100 cup of Joe are being viciously poached in their native Asian habitat with traps that clamp onto their feet, sometimes severing their legs, founder of Wildlife Alliance, Suwanna Gauntlett told USA Today.
The torture doesn’t stop there. The civets are crammed into tiny cages where they’re force-fed coffee berries instead of specific nutrients that are necessary for them to consume which they find when out in the wild. Some die due to the mal-nutrition they have been exposed to during their years in captivity.

The animals’ feces are scraped from their cages and the digested beans are picked out, washed, packed and sold for hundreds of dollars per kilo. Luxury retailer Harrods sells it for more than $2,500.
Makers claim it’s the highest quality coffee, however it’s more about the luxury image its associated with. The taste is allegedly a musky flavored brew with hints of chocolate and caramel.
Studies have shown that civet coffee has many health benefits such as the ability to fight Breast Cancer and decrease risk of Skin Cancer. It fights cavities, decreases risk of Diabetes and decreases risk of Parkinson’s disease. Even with all these benefits, is it really worth the torture some of these animals are exposed to just for the sake of our benefit? In a case of “If the shoe was on the other foot…” the same rules must apply in this situation as well.
Activists such as the World Animal Protection say that there is a humane way to get the poop coffee with a “wild-sourced, ‘cage-free’ version.” The humane way, however, is more expensive.
Til this day, people continue to buy this tainted coffee for the sake of drinking the most expensive drink on earth. Wildlife Alliance says they’re being poached so fast that “they’ll soon become vulnerable … demand will soon outrun the natural supply.” Gauntlett now straight-up tells people, “Please do not buy ‘weasel coffee’ or kopi luwak,” but that’s also the general consensus among people who have — everyone from Jay Leno to Washington Post food critic Tim Carman has practically spat the stuff out.
